Employment in Cyprus: clear terms from the first day
Sources checked:
Written expectations and careful procedures help prevent avoidable workplace disputes.
The procedure
Record the role, workplace, pay, working hours, leave and termination arrangements in writing. The Transparent and Predictable Working Conditions Law 25(I)/2023 sets information duties and minimum protections; a generic contract should be checked against the actual working arrangement.
What deserves attention
Check statutory and any applicable collective terms before agreeing probation, hours or pay. Keep records of salary payments, agreed changes and leave. When employment ends, assess the reason, applicable notice and any protected circumstances before issuing a letter. Giving notice is not, by itself, a complete assessment of whether a dismissal is lawful.
Act on documents, not assumptions
For a workplace concern, gather the contract, payslips and relevant correspondence. Employers should document the facts and obtain advice before dismissal; employees should seek advice promptly before signing a resignation or settlement. Notice requirements depend on service and the applicable rules, including sector-specific exceptions.
