Family reunification: check the sponsor’s status first

A family relationship is important, but the applicable residence category determines the route.
The procedure
For the third-country family-reunification route under Cap. 105, first assess the sponsor’s permit and the family members’ eligibility. Prepare evidence of the relationship and the applicable accommodation, resources and insurance requirements. The sponsor submits the application. The ordinary procedure envisages family members outside Cyprus, although specified exceptions may permit an application while they are already here.
What deserves attention
Do not apply one checklist to every family. Sponsor categories can affect waiting periods and exceptions; separate rules apply to families of EU citizens. Check the rules concerning spouses, children’s ages and custody before making travel plans. A family application should not be treated as automatic permission to enter, remain or work.
Prepare for your consultation
Bring passports, the sponsor’s permit, marriage and birth certificates, any custody orders and information about housing and income. Confirm the required certification and translations before obtaining documents abroad. Plan entry, filing and renewal as distinct steps, and check each family member’s position individually.
